
The Bat Devil arc is a surprisingly strong start to the series with brillitant introdution to the real motivations behind our cast.

<Chapter id="power-introduction" number="6-7" title="Power's Introduction" rating={4.5}>
  I've been thinking about Power's character introduction a lot lately, and I think Fujimoto absolutely nailed it. It begins with that iconic vending machine scene (which is much better in the anime) that leads into the chase around Meowy. I always appreciated this sequence, but only recently did I fully understand why it works so well.

    What makes this work so well is how the flashback doesn't feel like a pause in the action - it IS the action. Power's desperation in the present moment makes her past feel immediately relevant. During chapters 7-9, we learn an enormous amount about her character in just a few pages.
    
    This establishes one of my favorite aspects of Part 1: its impeccable pacing that never wastes time.

  Power's journey of learning to care about someone else is presented in a way that feels genuinely powerful to me. As a cat owner, I'm definitely biased, but personal connection is always valid. Even without that bias though, the emotional core works because of how well it's done, with the art matching it perfectly and just feeling like it makes sense.

  And then there's this scene where Meowy gets eaten and Power just stares at Denji and accepts it. "You said you can't pet Pochita anymore. I know how you feel. It's awful." We just saw processing what loving something actually means before she's forced to confront losing it. She doesn't fight back or try to do anything - just accepts it.

  ### What about Denji?
  
  Chainsaw man Is all about the contrast between the dark and the absurd. Throughout the story, Denji character will always float between caring about others and his selfish needs. Here, it is a bit comical because to the bat devil, he says "Bring me back my boobs" but almost immediately we are seeing him actually being able to relate to Power here.
  
  It does bring a question for me if Fujimoto pushes denji too much to just be "A clown", for a lack of better word, because he is showing emotional awareness quite often. I guess I'll only fully realize this my thoughts about this later but for now, Denji fights in this chapter has been great and i love this panel. This entire arc themeing about losing your pets especially for people who suffer like Denji and Power is just so powerful.

  Dealing with the "meaning of life" in media is always tricky. The message here - that "life is worth living for the small things" - borders on cliché, and the Bat Devil arc leans into it heavily. Everything in Power's journey revolves around this idea: starting as a mindless hunter who kills everything in sight to survive, she struggles to understand why she even cares about someone else.

  **All lives are equally trivial**
  
  This understanding is one of the hardest things to grapple with when thinking about life. There's no grand reason we're here, and it'll all be over soon. The idea of it ending is terrifying - to me, to a lot of people. And Power actively recognizes this. I really like how it's not even something she considers deeply at first; it's just her almost instinctual understanding that all lives are trivial and often feel meaningless.

  But she finds a reason to live, and that reason is what people struggles to accept, just like Power - it's simply about the supposedly "small things." The things we'd feel "dumb" for calling our reason to live. When I thought about death, I realized what scares me most is losing those small things. Not having my cat beside me anymore, not being able to laugh at my friends' silly jokes.
  
  Power feels the same here, and it's confusing. It feels foolish to care about "a cat" so much. What I love about this approach is how real it is to ME - There's no triumphant moment - just that stark "What a foolish reason" against black emptiness. It's uncomfortable, and almost shameful. Power's struggle feels incredibly realistic because it comes from a place of fear and vulnerability, and it doesn't really make her "better" - it just makes her... I almost said "Human" but that's not quite it now, does it ^^?

The flashback ends beautifully with Power's conflicting feelings -  She thinks about what she knew so far as a devil and her new realization for the first time that blood is also nice and warm.  Her being almost afraid to admit it and repeating "and.. and".. before she admits herself how she truly feels.
just like us humans, Power sees her reason to live hiding in plain sight. Realistically, she always knew that blood was warm, but only noticed it when she had someone to care about for the first time. She only realized it when she was hurt and bleeding herself while trying to protect what mattered to her.

The visual of her bleeding hands while holding Meowy is essentially her arc's statement in image form - sometimes the most meaningful moments come when we're literally or figuratively bleeding for what we love. It transforms the entire "trivial lives" philosophy because now she knows what makes a life significant: the capacity to feel warmth.

The chapter ends with Denji being so happy that he will get to touch Power's boobs. It's.. a bit of an emotional whiplast, to say the least, but at least we got our first Kon which especially when I read it was so cool, Fox Devil is really great design.

Re-reading has benefits and downsides, and this chapter suffers from being quite a bit worse on re-read due to Denji's character development throughout the manga as a whole.

There's something to be said about how both Denji and Power follow similar principles here - both find purpose in the "small things" that make life worth living, things usually looked down upon but that represent larger concepts for them. Denji is actually the one who fights for it, while Power appears unable to respond. He's the stronger one in this moment, and it's an interesting thing I noticed about his character here that is reflective throughout the story.  
In the context of his character, it's understandable why he'd care so much about what's effectively intimacy, connection, and feeling wanted. But having read this manga for so long, I can't help but sigh internally at his dialogue here. I was never particularly fond of Fujimoto's approach to Denji's humor, and I can't say it's improved over time. I undestand the contrast here but it's not always gonna work.


At least we end with one of the best designs in the manga - the Fox Devil - and get introduced to the future Division 4 members, though it's pretty minor.

Chapter 11 is certinaly something - It starts with Denji and Aki in the Hospital which is a completely different tone from how how the  chapter will end in Aki's apartment.

There's something almost absurd about Aki positioning himself as standing for "social justice" here. While some might argue that revenge is justice, Fujimoto seems to be painting Aki as someone who mistakes his personal motivations for moral authority - perhaps a critique of how people dress up their desires in noble language. What we've seen with Power and Denji suggests that life's meaning comes from supposedly trivial things - connection, simple pleasures, caring for others - not the grand causes people typically think about.

The surface comparison is "denji wanting to touch boobs" and seeking justice for murdered family seems obvious, but I think the entire point of Denji's character is to present those real human desires that everyone has in quite.. a raw form -  Denji's desires aren't really about physical gratification - they're about intimacy, connection, and feeling wanted by someone. Power's attachment to Meowy represents her discovery of love and care. Aki's quest for justice stems from grief and loss.  
All three are valid and are fundamental human needs, and all three don't fully realize or acknowledge what they are atually seeking, but they are looked differently at differently.

Whether this is specifically about how trauma can create self-deception, or a broader commentary on how we value different motivations, the contrast feels deliberate and meaningful.

Then there's the apartment scenes - honestly shorter than I remembered, and I totally get them. They're overall funny. I do like that Power is a bit of a comic relief character. It fits CSM and I think it gives good contrast to her more serious character arc.
I'm not entirely sure why we needed to go this much into the "poop devil" thing though 😭 Like OKAY I GOT IT, Power is stinky. Not sure I need to know about how much poop she's making.
The boob scene with Denji is one of my least favorite scenes in the manga, and I get it - she's a devil, he's... Denji, he's clueless and doesn't know what to do. I do wonder if there's even a way to make it less awkward... but I guess not. It is part of the point after all - to show how Denji is still like a kid, essentially.
It's still a pretty amusing scene overall, and personally I don't really understand how it can ruin Power's character. Denji has plenty of bad jokes in the manga and people are fine with that. I guess it's just how disgusting the jokes with Power here are, but at least from what I remember, they aren't supposed to return.

  When I got to reading Bat Devil Arc I didn't expect it to have so much peak in it, and I didn't remember that the scene with Makima is in it.

The boob scene with Power obviously serves its purpose - Denji is a kid who doesn't know anything about life, so his understanding of sexuality and affection is very simplified. His genuine reaction here is quite realistic. This scene could have been purely a gag if written by a less talented writer, but it's handled well here.

Denji's self-reflection on how some dreams can be underwhelming ties nicely to the overarching themes of this arc about finding purpose. It's a vital moment for him and for the readers - Denji's thoughts are very relatable - dealing with disappointments in the way to achieve your dream.

But Denji doesn't have the support structure to help him understand this. He only has Makima now.

I think this chapter is less about Denji's sexual needs and more about his need for a parental figure. When a kid is confused about relationships, they'd normally have guidance from a parent or family.  Aki will become like a big brother to him, but that's different from having a true parental figure to help make sense of the world, and in fact Aki in this portion is the one of the people who look down on him.

Makima's manipulative nature tells her exactly what to do. She slowly builds intimacy and the physical contact fills that void he feels, but most importantly, she positions herself as the understanding adult who can teach him about connection. That's what he actually needs more than any physical experience ath this point, when He's lost and clueless in the world and has no one to go for

Taking advantage of someone's inexperience while positioning yourself as their teacher is what makes this such a disturbingly realistic  portrayal of grooming. It's never just sexuality - it's about filling a void for someone  when they're most vulnerable.

## Chapter 13

I should mention that I really like how the Gun Devil is presented here. Fujimoto gives us just enough information to make us intrigued, and the whole premise of this entity going around the world killing so many people is genuinely great. It's presented really well art-wise too. The chapter also teaches us about how significant Devils are on a global scale, which is something that will come up again throughout the series.

Now, Aki has always been my least favorite character out of the main trio (which still puts him above 95% of characters in any media since I love Part 1 so much), and I've always struggled to resonate deeply with his character arc, even though I understand the concept behind him.
As for the snowball scene, I never fully got it at first. It was always an impressive scene—one of the most defining moments in the entire manga, no doubt. There's something powerful about how the innocent beginning contrasts so starkly with the immense destruction of the Gun Devil. The paneling in particular, and Fujimoto's choice to show exactly how many people died worldwide, really helps paint the bigger picture about how destrcutive he really is  

But even having a little brother myself and experiencing some sibling jealousy when I was younger, I didn't connect with it beyond appreciating the art and the strong contrast, while still feeling really bad for Aki. Especially reading it in retrospect, this scene is undeniably tragic.

  But I don't know, Something just didnt 't click with me here, So I asked a couple of friends who I know love Aki about what makes this stand out for them and I get it a bit more now.

I think objectively speaking, the snowball scene is probably one of the most layered scenes in the manga. The guilt that Aki feels because of telling Taiyo to just get some gloves (which is ironic because he cared about him at that moment just after being mean to him, just to see him die) is very... real. It's one of the most difficult things about Aki's character—I know he's wrong about making his entire life about revenge and I know he's making a mistake because it's not *really* his fault, but it's so understandable for him to blame himself that it's hard to not imagine I would feel the same way.

If I really try to look at it, I feel like I could find so many little details about Aki's characters here and how they are foreshadowed, but I think I will save those for when we see this scene again later in the story.

Regardless, this scene is as great as ever, It's still one of those that don't hit me personally as much, but it sure is great.
